Program Costs and Financial Aid

Gallaudet University students currently receiving financial aid are able to utilize their award package for credits taken abroad. All students who have completed and submitted their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the Gallaudet Financial Aid office by the appropriate deadlines will be considered for financial assistance each year.

For additional financial aid resources for your semester abroad (beyond what you use to pay for a traditional semester at Gallaudet), please see the scholarships page.

The Manager of Education Abroad and International Fellowships will work individually with each student to find ways for students to pay for education abroad opportunities. When thinking about the cost of programs, it's best for students to think about the difference between taking credits abroad and taking credits at Gallaudet (as opposed to thinking about the total cost of the program abroad).

Here are some sources of funding for study abroad

  1. Outside scholarships (such as the Gilman Scholarship or Fund for Education Abroad scholarship)
  2. Federal Financial Aid (such as Pell grants)
  3. Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) support
  4. Personal funds or familial funds

The Gilman Scholarship
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad. Such international exchange is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. If you are currently receiving a Pell Grant as part of your financial aid package, you are eligible to apply for this scholarship. If you aren't sure if you are receiving a Pell Grant, please contact the office of Financial Aid. Want to learn more about the Gilman Scholarship in ASL? Watch the video below. The next deadline for the Gilman Scholarship is Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at 11:59pm Pacific Time.

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA)
The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships. They give general scholarships as well as a couple dedicated scholarships which Gallaudet students are eligible to receive.  The first is called the Rainbow Scholarship and is specifically geared towards supporting LGBTQ students who study abroad. Secondly, FEA also gives out a DC Area Scholarship which is available to a deserving student who attends a U.S. university/college located in the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, or suburban Maryland. This scholarship is made possible by the generous support and fundraising efforts of international educators working in the DC Area. When you apply, you are automatically entered into all the scholarship categories you are eligible for. The next deadline for the Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship is January 12, 2022 at 12PM EST.
